About This Course
Many attorneys continue to meet demanding professional obligations while quietly struggling with substance use, mental health challenges, trauma, or chronic stress. Because they are still able to perform at a high level, these issues are often minimized or overlooked—both by the individuals experiencing them and by those around them.
Although “high-functioning” is not a clinical diagnosis, the term is commonly used to describe professionals who maintain outward success while underlying problems persist. In the legal profession, where long hours, high pressure, and a culture of self-reliance are common, this dynamic can delay recognition of problems and discourage attorneys from seeking help.
This CLE program examines the concept of “high-functioning” impairment in the legal profession. Participants will learn to identify common warning signs, understand the risks associated with untreated substance use and mental health issues, and explore practical steps attorneys can take to recognize concerns early and access appropriate support before problems escalate.
