    Balancing work and family has become a hot-button issue in recent years, with more and more employees demanding that businesses recognize and provide for families whether they are dealing with medical issues, military service or a newborn child. Many of these rights are detailed in the Paid Family Leave Act and it is incumbent upon employers and employees to understand their rights and obligations. This CLE course will provide a comprehensive review of both as well as eligibility requirements, compliance, strategies to avoid liability and how to coordinate adherence along with the specifics of New York’s Paid Family Leave Act, New York State Disability and Workers Compensation Acts.

    Barbara DeMatteo

    Barbara DeMatteo is an accomplished professional whose Human Resources experience spans over 36 years. In supporting businesses in varied industries across the United States, Barbara continually develops her knowledge of federal and state employment regulations, strengths in employee relations, interviewing, training as well as coaching supervisors and managers. Barbara acts in the capacity of a company's outsourced HR function in providing guidance on the most effective way to handle employee situations and limit liability. Writing and revising employee handbooks, developing meaningful and targeted job descriptions, developing and implementing performance management programs, and nurturing HR professionals through on site mentoring are her strengths. This comprehensive experience adds credibility to the training programs she develops and delivers to supervisors and managers and allows her to connect with trainees in a realistic and impactful way. Her mission is to develop ‘Managers of Process’ into more valuable ‘Managers of People™’.

    David Mahoney

    Dave works closely with business owners and human resource professionals to ensure that a company’s greatest asset, its workforce, doesn’t become its greatest liability. Dave takes a proactive approach to employer/employee relations, from hiring procedures and employee policies, to internal audits of wage and hour procedures, collective bargaining, discrimination, discipline and separation policies. Dave defends employers against all types of claims asserted by their employees. Although he has tried over 40 cases to verdict, Dave believes that litigation should only be used as a last resort – and is always looking for efficient, cost-effective ways to resolve his client’s issues.
