    The use of cannabis for medicinal purposes is now legal in many states, making it essential knowledge for practitioners. Presented by Dr. Bernie Lee, one of New York’s leading experts in the subject, this CLE course will begin with basic medical knowledge of cannabis and the endocannabinoid system. Dr. Lee will explain the effect of THC and CBD on the body, the differentiation between the two and its impact on the regulation of cannabis as a medicine. Patricia Heer, Esq., will then present the legislative side of the issue with an explanation of New York’s Compassionate Care Act and New Jersey’s The Compassionate Use Act. The course will include an explanation of the evolution of these key pieces of legislation as well as a presentation of current patient count by state, types of products approved for use in NY and NJ, the importance of additional qualified diagnoses and the vertical integration structure for businesses that work with these programs.

    Patricia Heer

    Patricia H. Heer practices in the area of business reorganization, financial restructuring and commercial litigation. She has represented all constituencies in and prior to bankruptcy proceedings and litigation spanning across a wide range of industries. She has successfully litigated a variety of business, contract, collection, and director and officer disputes.

    Additionally, Ms. Heer advises a wide array of cannabis businesses and ancillary businesses, including national advocacy groups focused on changing cannabis related prohibition laws, investors, license applicants, cultivators and dispensaries and hemp brands.

    Ms. Heer previously served as law clerk to the Honorable Robert E. Grossman of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of New York.

    Ms. Heer is a 2006 graduate of Hofstra University School of Law, where she was Research Editor for the Hofstra Law Review, and a graduate of St. John's University (B.A., summa cum laude). She is fluent in Polish.

    Bernie Lee

    Dr. Bernie Lee is the Associate Chief Medical Officer at New York’s largest palliative care agency, Metropolitan Jewish Hospice and Palliative Care. He also serves as Assistant Clinical Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Lee served as an active duty armor officer in the US Army after graduating from West Point Academy before earning his medical degree from Stony Brook School of Medicine. Dr. Lee is a strong voice and physician advocate of medical marijuana and is leading the charge to educate physicians on its safe and effective use in order to help alleviate the suffering of patients with chronic and terminal illness.
