About This Course
The relationship between humans and animals raises legal, ethical, and practical questions that reach far beyond traditional concepts of property law. This CLE program explores how courts and legislatures are responding to the complex issues that arise when animals are viewed as companions, victims, and stakeholders in society.
Participants will survey the primary statutes, case law, and ordinances that govern animal-related matters, while also examining topics such as animal welfare, cruelty prevention, and the rights and responsibilities of ownership. The discussion will extend to the role of animals in domestic violence situations, the development of pet trusts in estate planning, and the recognition of cognitive capacities in animals that increasingly influence legal and ethical debates.
Designed as a broad overview, this CLE course provides attorneys with both a foundation in current animal law and a framework for approaching the emerging challenges that continue to shape this evolving field.
