With a focus on the legal mechanics of importing goods into the US, this informative CLE course explains the framework for this key aspect of the international buy/sell transaction principal importation rules.
The presentation will explain the treaty creating the World Trade Organization (as well as its predecessor, the GATT or General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade), the key elements of the treaty, the most favored nation principle, national treatment and the tariff negotiating rounds.
The course will then delve into the details of the process of importing with a focus on its three main elements:
- The goods in question and how to classify them within the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS)
- The value of the imported goods
- The country of origin
The course will conclude by examining the various players in the import process and how the rules can be maneuvered to reduce import and custom duties.
