Betting on sports is as old as the games themselves, but the legality of sports betting seems to require constant updates. The most recent came when the Supreme Court, in Murphy v. NCAA, effectively struck down the Professional & Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), making legalized sports betting potentially legal in every state. Presented by Robert Boland, J.D., Athletics Integrity Officer at Penn State University, this timely and fascinating CLE course will present the potential effects, both in the long and short term, of sports betting on the regulatory environment of professional and college sports across the country. The position of various states on the issue, the type of betting under consideration and the legal barriers to wagers outside the confines of the law will be examined. The course will also look at the stances of the various leagues and colleges in light of changes to the law and the potential pitfalls they may present. The process of implementing new regulations as well as safeguards to protect the integrity of the game will all be discussed.
