In practice, however, different uses of AI trigger different professional obligations and require a more tailored approach.

This CLE course introduces the Ethics Zone Framework, a practical model for assessing AI use across distinct areas of law firm practice. Rather than treating AI as a single ethical category, the framework organizes activities according to the nature of the work, the sensitivity of the information involved, and the professional conduct rules implicated at each stage. Participants will examine how ethical exposure changes as AI moves from internal operational tasks to client matters and court-related work.

The program also addresses one of the most frequently underestimated areas of risk: back-office functions such as billing, scheduling, and timekeeping, which often involve significant confidential data despite appearing administrative in nature. Attendees will gain a clear framework for evaluating AI tools, identifying ethical obligations tied to specific use cases, and developing a practical roadmap for responsible implementation throughout the firm.
