About This Course
This CLE program provides attorneys and legal professionals with a practical roadmap for advising immigrant clients pursuing U.S. citizenship and naturalization. The program examines the legal requirements, procedural considerations, and potential obstacles that practitioners should evaluate when determining whether a client is eligible for citizenship and how best to proceed.
The program begins with an examination of the different ways an individual may obtain U.S. citizenship, including citizenship acquired or derived through a parent. It then addresses the requirements for naturalization, including statutory eligibility criteria, exemptions, exceptions, and circumstances that may create complications or prevent a client from qualifying. Attendees will learn how to assess a client’s circumstances, identify potential issues early, and conduct effective eligibility reviews using practical screening tools and checklists.
The program also walks practitioners through the preparation and filing of Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, and provides an overview of what clients can expect throughout the naturalization process, from filing and biometrics through the interview and oath ceremony. Particular attention will be given to common filing mistakes, case-management considerations, and effective strategies for counseling clients and addressing potential challenges. By the conclusion of the program, attendees will have a clearer framework for evaluating citizenship eligibility and guiding clients through the naturalization process.
