This CLE program examines the critical intersection of criminal law and immigration law—commonly referred to as “crimmigration”—and the profound immigration consequences that may flow from criminal charges, pleas, and convictions. The course is designed to equip criminal defense attorneys with a working understanding of how criminal dispositions can trigger removal, inadmissibility, or other adverse immigration outcomes for non-citizen clients.

Participants will learn to identify immigration “red flags” at the earliest stages of representation, understand when and how immigration consequences attach, and avoid common advisory and plea-related errors. The program also addresses counsel’s constitutional obligations under Padilla v. Kentucky, as well as related ethical duties of competence, communication, and diligence when representing immigrant defendants in criminal matters.
