About This Course
This CLE course examines the legal issues that can arise when comic book characters and properties are adapted for film, television, and consumer products. Using practical examples, the program addresses common problems in licensing arrangements, including unclear grants of rights, approval and control provisions, chain-of-title issues, royalty calculations, and limitations on protecting a brand across different markets.
The course explores how weaknesses in deal structure and contract language can create obstacles to adaptations and merchandising opportunities. Attorneys will consider strategies for drafting clearer agreements, allocating risk, defining rights and approvals, and addressing potential disputes before they interfere with a project.
Particular attention is given to coordinating the interests of creators, publishers, studios, licensees, and other rights holders while preserving flexibility for future uses of the property. The program provides practical guidance for attorneys negotiating and structuring cross-media licensing transactions in the comics industry.
